Abstract

This study focuses on the grammatical refutations made by Abū Ḥayyān in his exegetical work Al-Baḥr al-Muḥīṭ, specifically as addressed by Iraqi researchers, in response to his predecessors among exegetes and grammarians—especially al-Zamakhsharī and Ibn ʿAṭiyya. Abū Ḥayyān frequently refuted these scholars, along with others such as al-ʿUkbarī and al-Ḥūfī. The study demonstrates that Abū Ḥayyān’s approach to syntactic issues was characterized by clarity and simplicity, avoiding artificial interpretations and undue complexity. He distanced himself from contrived grammatical analyses of Qur'anic expressions, favoring the most eloquent and plausible interpretations rather than rare or anomalous ones. This research is confined to Abū Ḥayyān’s refutations concerning nouns only, based on selected examples for analytical study
