Abstract

The noble judge, Mawlā Owais ibn Muhammad al-Rumi, known as (Waisi) (d. 1037 AH), author of the book Marj al-Bahrain, addressed the objections raised by the author of Al-Qamus concerning certain entries in Sihah al-Jawhari. This work is considered one of the most significant lexicographical correction books compiled at the beginning of the 11th century AH. He discussed linguistic materials and terms on which Majd al-Din al-Fayruzabadi (d. 817 AH) objected to certain points in the Sihah of Abu Nasr al-Jawhari (d. 393 AH), following the arrangement method of Sihah in organizing its content. One of the linguistic entries he researched, analyzed, and referred to in primary linguistic sources was the term "Shaya." Through his analysis, he supported al-Jawhari's stance, which differed from Sibawayh's perspective on the root of the word. Al-Jawhari believed that the hamza (glottal stop) is original in the word unless evidence indicates that it was replaced by a ya (E) or a waw (O).
