Abstract

The present study aims to explore the effect of a counseling program based on Choice Theory in reducing conspicuous consumption among university female students. A review of related literature and previous studies on conspicuous consumption led to the development of a relevant measurement scale. The researchers adopted the definition provided by Veblen (1960) for constructing the scale items, resulting in a final version composed of 26 items. For the purpose of the study, the researchers designed a counseling program based on the Choice Theory approach as presented by Borders and Drury (1992). The program was implemented with the experimental group in 12 counseling sessions, conducted twice weekly, with each session lasting 60 minutes. Data were analyzed using SPSS software and various statistical methods. The results indicated that the counseling program based on Choice Theory had a significant effect in reducing conspicuous consumption among university female students. Based on these findings, the researchers offered a set of recommendations and suggestions.
