Abstract

The research aimed to identify the concepts of smart cities and their most important terms (digital cities, electronic cities, knowledge cities and virtual cities), identify the characteristics of smart cities, identify the most important pillars and foundations that must be available for a city to be smart, and study the extent to which the concept of smart cities applies to the city of Baquba (Nawruz and Maki City complexes). Considering that they are two advanced complexes and many smart applications have been used to improve the quality of urban life for their residents, and in order for them to be a modern and advanced experience that we seek to apply to the rest of the residential neighborhoods in the city of Baqubah, several methods were adopted in this research, namely the (descriptive and analytical) method and the field study that the researcher conducted in collecting information about the two complexes, The research problem focused on the extent of success of applying smart city technologies in the city of Baqubah through the Nawroz and Mecca City complexes. The research reached several results, the most important of which is that smart city technologies can be applied in the city of Baqubah, provided that changes are made to the infrastructure in all its aspects. The most important proposals were represented by the necessity of strengthening the traditional infrastructure in the city of Baqubah, including improving the electricity and water networks to support smart city applications.
