Abstract

The research, titled "US Policy Towards the Republic of Korea on Political Opposition and Human Rights 1974-1976," aims to shed light on the impact of the Ford administration's adoption of human rights issues. There were motives behind this interest, including the United States' desire to maintain the strategic alliance with South Korea as a key ally in East Asia during the Cold War, especially in the face of North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union, and to encourage political moderation. While the United States supported the alliance, it sought to discourage the extreme political repression practiced by the Park regime, especially after the implementation of the Yushin Constitution. The research reached several conclusions, the most important of which are: The US position was characterized by hesitation and contradiction, as Washington found itself in a real dilemma between its declared values of supporting democracy and human rights, and its strategic interests in maintaining a major ally in East Asia within its Cold War camp. There was also a lack of coherence in US political action towards the Republic of Korea, due to the seriousness of the House of Representatives and Congress in general in using pressure tools against the Park regime in South Korea, in order to achieve greater flexibility in the field of human rights and political opposition. Meanwhile, the US administration’s position was not as strong, due to the priorities of US interests over issues related to democracy and human rights, which are promoted by Western media in general and American media in particular.
