Abstract

Classical literary letters are considered among the most prominent forms of prose in Arab heritage, as they combined both intellectual and aesthetic dimensions and served as a means of self-expression and transmission of cultural and social values. Ancient scholars generally approached them from a historical or documentary perspective, with few exceptions in some studies, while modern Arabic criticism has enabled their re-reading as literary texts carrying renewed rhetorical and semantic potentials. This research aims to approach literary letters in light of contemporary critical methodologies to reveal their textual structure and aesthetics, and to highlight their capacity to accommodate modern critical approaches. This research has concluded that these letters are not confined to their historical or pragmatic dimension, but rather manifest linguistic and symbolic patterns that make them open texts susceptible to interpretation and re-reading, which establishes their presence in the arena of modern Arabic criticism.
