Abstract

This study examines the impact of dialectal variations on built nouns in the commentaries of Al-Kafiya by Ibn Al-Hajib during the 7th and 8th Hijri centuries, focusing on three main categories: relative nouns, demonstrative nouns, and verbal nouns. The research highlights the dialectal diversity in the use of these nouns across Arab tribes and reviews multiple forms in singular, dual, and plural, illustrating the differences noted by grammarians and commentators in interpretation and grammatical analysis. It also demonstrates how these variations influence syntactic understanding and interpretation, noting that some changes were specific to poetry or limited to certain tribes such as Hudhail, Banu Tamim, and the people of Hijaz. The study concludes that analyzing these dialects provides deeper insight into the development of built nouns and the subtle distinctions of Modern Standard Arabic, contributing to a unified analytical framework of the grammarians’ and commentators’ efforts.
