Abstract

The research aims to shed light on the state of democratic change that Mongolia witnessed in the late eighties and early nineties, as it witnessed an amazing transformation from an authoritarian political system with a state-controlled and managed economy to an open and competitive multilateral system with a free market economy, and the country moved through the stages of political protest and political liberalization. And the democratic breakthrough through free, open and competitive multi-party elections. In just over a decade, Mongolia has been shaken from its communist orientation to a new liberal democratic society. How can such a dramatic transformation occur in a country that seems isolated from the rest of the world, and in seventy years? From Soviet influence, Mongolia was an unofficial satellite region of the Soviet Union, and at various stages the General Secretaries of the Soviet Communist Party made decisions that had a significant impact on political and economic life in Mongolia.
