Abstract

The study aims to examine the joy–sorrow duality in the poetry of Mish‘al al-Bayati, as this duality constitutes a prominent human and aesthetic presence in his poetic experience. Joy and sorrow are not merely transient emotions; rather, they are two central axes through which the poetic sensibility is formed, and through which the vision of the self and the world is articulated. Undoubtedly, tracing the manifestations of joy and sorrow in the poetry of a contemporary poet requires a careful reading of his oeuvre, given the diversity of themes and styles that characterize his experience. In his texts, light and shadow, hope and fracture coexist, forming an artistic balance that reveals the depth of his human sensibility. The joy–sorrow duality has received notable attention in modern criticism because it brings together contradiction and complementarity at the same time. It is not understood as two separate opposites, but as two opposing forces that interact to generate an emotional current, endowing the text with vitality and richness
