Abstract

The research problem centers on the regional and international competition over the Balochistan region in West Asia, driven by its considerable geopolitical significance. This importance derives from its strategic location and maritime frontage on the Arabian Sea, which has facilitated the development of seaports of substantial commercial value, particularly in linking the Gulf region with the countries of South and East Asia. In addition, Balochistan possesses abundant natural resources, including agricultural potential, tourism assets, and hydrocarbon reserves, factors that have rendered it a contested sphere of influence among three neighboring states, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, as well as major international powers seeking to establish a strategic presence in the region, most notably China, India, and the United States. China, in particular, is motivated by the strategic importance of Gwadar Port, located in Pakistani Balochistan and overlooking the Arabian Sea; under a bilateral agreement with Pakistan, the port has been developed by China, enabling it to export goods and energy resources through this route. India, by contrast, aims to access Balochistan via Iranian territory in order to utilize Chabahar Port, which provides connectivity to the Arabian Sea and global maritime trade routes, thereby facilitating trade flows and access to energy resources. The presence of China and India in both Iranian and Pakistani Balochistan extends beyond economic objectives to include strategic and military dimensions, particularly in the Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, the United States views this expanding presence as a potential strategic challenge and has consequently sought to establish its own foothold in Balochistan, partly through its relations with Pakistan. Furthermore, it has been suggested in some geopolitical discourses that the United States supports proposals for the establishment of an independent Baloch state within the broader framework of what is often referred to as the “New Middle East” project
