Abstract

This study examines the figure of Ali Ahmed Nasser, known as Ali Antar, as one of the most prominent political and military leaders in the history of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) during the second half of the twentieth century. He played a pivotal role in the national struggle against British occupation and in state-building after independence, in addition to his contributions to internal political conflicts and the issue of Yemeni unity. Ali Antar's upbringing and social environment contributed to shaping his national consciousness from an early age and motivated him to join the ranks of the resistance against British occupation in the 1950s. His affiliation with the Arab Nationalist Movement had a significant impact on shaping his political and intellectual orientations, which was reflected in his role in developing the political awareness of the southern resistance. After achieving independence in 1967, Ali Antar continued his career within state institutions, rising through the ranks to become one of the most prominent leaders of the Yemeni Socialist Party. He held important positions, including Minister of Defense and Vice President, and contributed to formulating domestic and foreign policies. He also participated in managing the challenges facing the fledgling state, both internally and in its international relations. The study also examined his stance on Yemeni unity, noting that while he supported it in principle, he advocated for its realization within a balanced political framework that preserved the distinctiveness of the Marxist system in South Yemen. His role was also prominent in the wars between the two Yemens in 1972 and 1979, where he demonstrated competence in managing border conflicts and contributed to maintaining a balance of power amidst complex regional and international circumstances. Regarding the internal political conflict in South Yemen during the period (1967-1986), Ali Antar played a significant role in attempting to achieve a balance between competing forces within the party and the state. However, escalating political disputes led to the events of January 13, 1986, which culminated in his assassination and marked a decisive turning point in the history of South Yemen. The study concludes that Ali Antar represents a prominent model of a leader who combined military struggle with political action and actively contributed to shaping the course of modern Yemen. His biography reflects the complex nature of the historical period, characterized by the effects of the Cold War and ideological conflicts. Studying this figure is essential for understanding the roots of political transformations in Yemen and connecting them to current contexts
