Domestic Water in Diyala Governorate and its Management Methods

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the reality of domestic water in Diyala Governorate in terms of its sources, distribution patterns, and management efficiency, in light of the natural and human challenges facing the water sector. The importance of the study stems from the increasing demand for water due to population growth and urban expansion, compared to the limited water resources in some seasons and their fluctuation in others. This places increasing pressure on the water supply system in the governorate. The research adopted the descriptive analytical method and the spatial method, through studying the geographical variations in the distribution of domestic water services among the administrative units of the governorate The research analyzed the efficiency of distribution networks and the level of water loss, as well as assessing the role of the relevant institutions in managing this vital resource. The research also analyzed the development data for drinking water services in Diyala Governorate, its importance, the lengths of water networks, the coverage ratio, the deficit in these lengths, and the amount of energy supplied. Then it addressed the calculation of future estimates up to the year 2030 using the planning standards adopted for this purpose, then formulating future directions at the district level and setting planning goals to achieve them to ensure the provision of potable water, preserve available resources, and control population growth. The research concluded that there is a clear spatial disparity in the level of services Weakness in infrastructure efficiency, high rates of water loss, along with administrative and technical challenges affecting the sustainability of supplies, also showed that domestic water management suffers from the absence of integrated strategic planning and weak application of modern technologies. The research concludes with a set of recommendations that focus on the need to develop water networks, enhance management efficiency by adopting integrated water resources management methods, and use modern technologies, as well as raising community awareness of the importance of rationalizing water consumption, which contributes to achieving water sustainability and improving the level of services in Diyala Governorate
