Linguistic Argumentation between Knowledge, Conception, and Mind in the Thought of Abu Bakr Al-Azzawi

Abstract

Argumentation is regarded as one of the fundamental concepts that has intersected with various disciplines, particularly the cognitive sciences. Numerous studies have expanded the scope of linguistic argumentation, among which the contributions of Abu Bakr Al-Azzawi stand out prominently. His work is distinguished by shifting argumentation from the level of language to that of the mind. According to this perspective, argumentation is not confined to being merely a linguistic structure; rather, it represents cognitive and conceptual mental processes that precede language itself. It is based on the construction of conceptualizations that later take shape as linguistic and non-linguistic discourses and expressions. Through the formation and direction of these conceptual structures, argumentation seeks to influence and persuade the recipient. By its connection with the cognitive sciences, argumentation has moved beyond its traditional linguistic framework toward a deeper and broader cognitive, mental, and conceptual level.
