Abstract

This research analyzes sociolinguistic identity construction in sample English conversations. Identity is understood not as essential but as continuously negotiated across language and social practice, an index of cultural and collective rather than psychological circumstances. Identity incorporates categories like social class, temporary conversational roles, and culture-based positions in different contexts. This paper considers how interlocutors use linguistic resources- labels, implied meanings, code-switching, and dialogic positioning- to perform, challenge, or confirm identities. Intentional decision making, unconscious cues, external judgments, and system ideological factors condition all these processes. Through analysis of political discourse, mundane dialogues, and media talk, the study illustrates the dynamic interplay between structural constraint and personal agency in identity negotiation and how identities are enacted, contested, and reconstituted in communicative practice
