Abstract

This research paper examines Annie Baker’s play The Flick through the lens of ideology and the state's ideological apparatus. The study aims to elucidate how social norms, beliefs, and power structures operate in everyday life and influence individual behavior. It analyzes the characters, their actions, and their interrelationships to explain how culture and “everyday life” function as subtle forms of social control. The analysis reveals that The Flick offers a realistic portrayal of life in a small movie theater, illustrating how social norms and power dynamics shape decision-making, manifested through seemingly innocuous actions such as casual conversations and work rituals. The findings suggest that ideology operates not only through legal or political institutions but also within the social fabric of everyday interaction, in both work and personal relationships.
