Abstract

This study aims to analyze and estimate surface runoff volume and assess its role in identifying optimal catchment areas for water harvesting within the Wadi Samir Basin, which covers an area of 1,694 km². The study employed the Soil Conservation Service–Curve Number (SCS–CN) method integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools. Detailed hydrological analyses and statistical approaches were utilized to estimate the spatial extent and volume of surface runoff across the basin and to develop a comprehensive classification of land cover types. The results revealed that Curve Number (CN) values ranged from 25 to 91, with the majority of the basin falling within medium to high CN categories. These findings indicate relatively low surface permeability across the study area and correspondingly high runoff potential. Furthermore, the analysis identified three optimal sites for the construction of water-harvesting dams, each characterized by distinct storage capacities. The findings highlight the effectiveness of integrating hydrological modeling and geospatial techniques in supporting sustainable water resource management and water-harvesting planning in arid and semi-arid environments.
