Abstract

This research examines rhetorical argumentation in the panegyrics of the Banu Abbad, considering it an effective mechanism in constructing and directing poetic discourse towards persuasion and influence on the recipient. In the poetry of the Taifa period, panegyric was not merely an expression of admiration for the praised figure or a recounting of their virtues; rather, it constituted a rhetorical discourse in which linguistic, figurative, and argumentative means combined to establish the praised figure's worthiness of leadership, merit, and status. The research aims to uncover the most prominent argumentative strategies employed by the Banu Abbad poets in constructing their panegyrics and to demonstrate the effectiveness of rhetorical devices in achieving the aims of panegyric discourse . The research drew upon selected examples of panegyrics by al-Mu'tamid ibn Abbad and the princes of the Banu Abbad dynasty, while also utilizing the poetry of several poets associated with the Abbad court, particularly Ibn al-Labbana, Ibn Hamdis, and Abd al-Jalil ibn Wahbun. The applied aspect focused on a range of argumentative techniques, including argumentation through emphasis, simile, metaphor, antithesis, religious allusion, emotional appeal, argumentation based on values and attributes, and inference from the influence of the praised figure on others. The research concluded that panegyric discourse among the Banu Abbad is based on a close interplay between aesthetic and argumentative functions. Rhetorical imagery not only serves to embellish but also becomes a means of establishing meaning and persuading the recipient. Emphasis and hyperbole contribute to solidifying the image of the praised figure, while religious and ethical references lend the discourse pragmatic and authoritative power. Emotional appeal deepens the connection between the poet, the recipient, and the praised figure. Thus, Abbadian panegyric poetry reveals a clear awareness of the power of language in crafting the image of the praised figure, consolidating their status, and creating an impact on the recipient.
