Abstract

This research examines the grammatical poetic evidence related to nominative constructions (al-marfuʿat) in the work of al-Samin al-Halabi (d. 756 AH), specifically in his encyclopedic book "Al-Durr al-Maṣun fiʿUlum al-Kitab al-Maknun", which is considered one of the most significant grammatical and exegetical sources in Arabic linguistic heritage. The study highlights how al-Samin employed poetic citations to establish grammatical rules and explain linguistic phenomena concerning nominatives, such as the subject (al-mubtada), predicate (al-khabar), doer (al-faʿil), agent of the passive (naʾib al-faʿil), and the subjects of kana and its sisters, among others.This research reveals al-Samin’s analytical and critical approach to poetic evidence. He was not merely a transmitter of traditional views, but a grammarian who interpreted and analyzed the poetic lines in a way that served both Qur’anic meaning and grammatical precision. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical method, tracing, classifying, and analyzing the poetic examples, referencing their original sources and grammatical contexts.The objective is to demonstrate the scientific value of poetic evidence in al-Samin’s work, clarify his grammatical methodology, and evaluate his adherence to or deviation from traditional grammatical rules. Furthermore, the study seeks to explain the interconnection between poetic citation and grammatical interpretation in al-Durr al-Maṣun, and how these citations supported rule formation and text interpretation.The research concludes that al-Samin heavily relied on poetic evidence, characterized by accurate citation and deep analytical commentary, making his work a crucial source for understanding the development of grammatical-exegetical methodology in the 8th century AH.
