Abstract

The research focuses on estimating the volume of surface runoff based on hydrological characteristics. It is known that flash floods occur in arid and semi-arid areas as a result of excessive rainfall, causing huge losses in lives, property, and agricultural lands. This necessitated the need to pay attention to studying this aspect in the study area because it is considered a vital place crowded with people. The aim of the study is to analyze and estimate the volume of runoff in the study area and its severity for urban areas and agriculture. The model with the engineering system (HEC-HMS) was used to calculate the flow hydrograph curve for years with different return periods and their flow rates depending on the (SCS) method. The result of the study was that the specified study area from Buhriz Bridge to the third Baqubah Bridge extends over a length and area of 6,590 km², with a flowing water volume of 153.422 million/m³, and with an estimated flow volume of 384.148 million m³ during the different return periods from (10-200) with a maximum discharge of 3.96 m³/s - 9.84 m³/s with a maximum connection time of 18.75 - 18.5 hours during the return period (10-200).
