The Effect of a Counseling Program Using the Negative Cognitive Restructuring Extinction Technique on Reducing Identity Diffusion among Adolescents

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the effect of a counseling program based on the negative cognitive restructuring extinction technique on reducing identity diffusion among adolescents. This objective is examined through testing the following hypotheses: 1. There are no statistically significant differences at the (0.05) level between the rank scores of the control group in the pre-test and post-test. 2. There are no statistically significant differences at the (0.05) level between the rank scores of the experimental group in the pre-test and post-test. 3. There are no statistically significant differences at the (0.05) level between the rank scores of the experimental group and the control group in the post-test. The current study is limited to adolescent students in secondary schools for the academic year (2024–2025). The researcher employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test–post-test control group structure (experimental and control groups). The study sample consisted of (20) students randomly assigned into two groups, with (10) students in each group. Equivalence between the two groups was established across selected variables, An Identity Diffusion Scale was constructed, consisting of (20) items. Reliability was established using two methods: test–retest reliability, which reached (0.85), and Cronbach’s alpha, which reached (0.82), A counseling program based on the negative cognitive restructuring extinction technique was implemented. The validity of the counseling program was verified through face validity. The program consisted of (9) counseling sessions, conducted at a rate of two sessions per week, with each session lasting (45) minutes, Based on the study results, the researcher presented several recommendations and suggestions
