Abstract

This research examines the role of the political and military elite in the Mamluk state in employing the religious dimension to achieve political legitimacy for their rule, in light of their lack of traditional foundations of legitimacy such as lineage or hereditary succession. The Mamluk sultans relied on a set of religious means to strengthen their position, most notably the revival of the Abbasid Caliphate in Cairo, the expansion of the judicial system through sectarian plurality, and the adoption of sultanic titles with religious connotations. They also paid great attention to the care of the Two Holy Sanctuaries, the organization of pilgrimage affairs, In addition, they raised the banner of jihad against the Crusaders and the Mongols, which contributed to strengthening their position as defenders of Islam. These policies collectively helped to consolidate the legitimacy of the Mamluk state and ensure the stability of its rule for several centuries.
